Offering brooms and besoms for weddings and handfastings, witch’s ceremonial brooms, brooms for cleaning and even brooms for flying, from the Scheumack Broom Company, located in beautiful Eugene, Oregon.
My name is Samantha (aka Broomchick), one of 6 members of the Scheumack Broom Company. When I first moved to Eugene, in 1997, I happened upon this small group of broom makers and I began working for the company as a leather worker, decorating walking sticks, staffs and bellows. Throughout the years I have done some broom sewing, broom finishing and other odds and ends around the broom shop, but I really found my niche when I began selling our products at craft shows and online.
In 2008 I started the Broomchick Etsy shop hoping that the online sales would help bring in some money for the crew and myself during the hard winter months, and I found that this was the best way I could continue to be a part the broom shop. Using my impeccable customer service, computer, photography, and graphic design skills to help show off these amazing brooms.
I am the one who picks them, packs them and ships them out to you, but the real talent is our fearless leader, Thurman Sceumack, who started this business more than 30 years ago. These brooms are his designs and he is the one who taught our crew about the brooms and traditions that go along with them.
Seth and Michael are the hard working men of the shop, making the majority of the brooms from start to finish for the last 15+ years. These guys select your broom sticks, mix the colors and create each unique piece, following their artistic vision along with using the ancient tools and techniques that were taught to them by Thurman.
Emily and Tater the pug are the resident dying crew (along with some help from Seth) they are responsible for the brilliant colors of the broom corn, which is completely dyed by hand. This is the messiest job in the broom shop! Emily also takes care of the wholesale shipping when she can, and she recently gave birth to baby Sammy, the newest member of the team.
Last, but not least, is Adina, Thurman’s wife. She keeps us all in line (especially Thurman), lovingly adding a touch of organization, and inspiration. You will often see Adina running in and out of the shop doing broom errands with her faithful companion, Bear the dog.
When I’m not running the Broomchick ETSY site, I also enjoy singing rock-n-roll with my band, The Soothesayers, blowing glass and hanging out with my amazing Pug, Brutus Beefcake.
Cheers to making a clean sweep!
